MAJ Darryl W. Lyon was born in Erie
, Pennsylvania . He is a 1989 graduate from the Pennsylvania State
University with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and a minor in
Business. He is a 1995 graduate of the University of Maine with a Master of
Arts Degree in Communication. He is currently enrolled in Husson College
’s Master of Science in Business program.
MAJ Lyon enlisted as a naval
cryptologist in 1989. He was a member of a no-notice eleven man cryptologic
team stationed in Winter Harbor , ME. After his initial tour, he enlisted as
a Combat Medic in the Maine Army National Guard’s B/3-172nd IN (MTN).
After graduating as the distinguished honor graduate from Maine ’s Officer
Candidate School , MAJ Lyon served as a Platoon Leader for Bravo Company. He
was then selected to help stand up Maine ’s elite 11th Civil Support Team
(Weapons of Mass Destruction) as the Operations Officer. He was promoted to
Deputy Commander of the team. Following that assignment, he took command of
B/3-172nd Infantry (Mountain) in October 2004. He deployed the company to
Tallil , Iraq from January 2006 to March 2007 as the commander. Upon his
change of command in September 2007, MAJ Lyon was assigned as the University
of Maine ’s ROTC department’s Enrollment Officer.
MAJ Lyon’s awards include the
Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), the Army
Commendation Medal (3 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), the Naval
Good Conduct Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Ribbon
(with Gold Star), the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism
Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He is an inducted member of the
Infantry’s Order of St. Maurice.
MAJ Lyon lives with his wife and
three children in Bangor , Maine . He is the past president of the Bangor
Lions Club, a founding officer of the COL Lewis Millett Chapter of Maine’s
National Infantry Association; a member of St Andrew’s Lodge, the Anah
Temple Shrine and volunteers his time as a coach for Bangor Youth Football.
