Basic Course (Freshman and Sophomores)

MSL 100 Leadership LabAvailable only to students enrolled/contracted in the ROTC program. Cadets develop and improve military leadership skills by participating in hands on training.  Includes continuous counseling and periodic evaluations of cadet performance.  In case of class conflicts, an alternate leadership lab can be arranged with the permission of the Military Science Department Chairperson.  

Leadership Lab occurs once a month on a Saturday from 0700-1300.

Basic Course cadets are required to attend two Leadership Labs a semester.

MSL 101 Foundations of LeadershipIntroduces students to issues and competencies that are central to a commissioned officer's responsibilities. Establish framework for understanding officership, leadership, and Army values followed and life skills such as physical fitness and time management. No military obligation associated with this course.

None. Corequisite: MSL 100.    Credits: 1
MSL 102 Basic LeadershipEstablishes foundation of basic leadership fundamentals such as problem solving, communications, briefings and effective writing goal setting, techniques for improving listening and speaking skills and all introduction to counseling. No military obligation associated with this course.

MSL 201 Individual Leadership StudiesStudents identify successful leadership characteristics through observation of others and self through experimental learning exercises.  Students record observed traits in a dimensional leadership journal and discuss observations in small group settings. No military obligation associated with this course.

None. Corequisite: MSL 100.   Credits: 2
MSL 202 Leadership and TeamworkStudy examines how to build successful teams, various methods for influencing action, effective communication in setting and achieving goals, the importance of timing the decision, creativity in the problem solving process, and obtaining team buy-in through immediate feedback. No military obligation associated with this course.

None.  Corequisite: MSL 100.   Credits: 2

 

Advanced Course (Juniors and Seniors)

MSL 100 Leadership LabAvailable only to students enrolled/contracted in the ROTC program. MSL 301 Leadership and Problem SolvingStudents conduct self-assessment of leadership style, develop personal fitness regimen, and learn to plan and conduct individual/small unit tactical training while testing reasoning and problem-solving techniques. Students receive direct feedback on leadership abilities.

Prerequisites & Notes
Basic course or permission from Professor of Military Science.  Corequisite: MSL 100.   Credits: 3
MSL 302 Leadership and EthicsExamines the role of communications, values and ethics play in effective leadership. Topics include ethical decision making, consideration of others, spirituality in the military and surveys Army leadership doctrine. Emphasis on improving oral and written communication abilities.

Prerequisites & Notes
MSL 301 or permission. Corequisite: MSL 100.  Credits: 3
MSL 401 Leadership and ManagementDevelop student proficiency in planning and executing complex operations, functioning as a member of a staff and mentoring subordinates. Students explore training management, methods of effective staff collaboration, and developmental counseling techniques.

Prerequisites & Notes
MSL 302 or permission. Corequisite: MSL 100.   Credits: 4
MSL 402 OfficershipStudy includes case study analysis of military law and practical exercises on establishing an ethical command climate. Students must complete a semester long senior leadership project that requires them to plan, organize, collaborate analyze and demonstrate their leadership skills. Students not contracted as ROTC cadets may take the course with the permission of the Military Science Department Chairperson.

Satisfies the General Education Ethics and Writing Intensive Requirements.

MSL 350 The Evolution of American WarfareHistorical analysis of American theory of warfare from colonial period through Operation Desert Storm and the applications of Force XXI. Social, economic and political influences are examined, tracing the evolution of the American military; the development of a global military strategy, imprint of the social fabric of the nation on the military as the United States evolved into a world power. Additionally, the student will examine the effects of institutions on organization structures. Technology and the practice of warfare is emphasized.

Satisfies the General Education Western Cultural Tradition and Social Contexts and Institutions Requirements.

MSL 105 Leadership and Physical Fitness

A study of the United States Army physical fitness program, including aerobic exercises and strength-building programs, which provide actual leadership and fitness opportunities. Emphasis on the importance of exercise and fitness to the individual and development of a personalized training program.
