On-Line Safety Training

A complete listing of required training is available on the Safety Training web page.

Employees of the University include: Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students, Post Docs, and Student Employees (including work study students, Teaching Assistants, Resident Directors, and any other person who receives pay or compensation for work performed).


Training Topic | Frequency Who's Required

Annual Basic Safety Training | Initially and Annually

All employees
Bloodborne Pathogens Refresher Training | Annually All employees who work with or handle blood or certain other bodily fluids on the job, or whose job responsibilities include activities (for instance laboratory, blood cleanup, first aid, etc.) that might expose them to these fluids.
Confined Space Refresher Training | As needed All employees who may enter or standby for the entry of another worker into a confined space (permit required and non-permit required).
Computer Workstations | Annually All employees whose job requires them to operate a computer terminal for more than four (4) hours on a daily basis.
Dining Services New Employee Training | Initially and with new changes All Dining Services employees
Farm Safety (Agricultural Training Requirements) | Initally and Annually All employees engaged in farming/agricultural activities.
Fieldwork | Initially All UMaine employees involved in fieldwork (independent study, research, etc.) should be adequately informed of the hazards associated with working in the field.
Fire Extinguisher Annual Refresher Training | Annually

All employees who are required to use a fire extinguisher. Also, safety or evacuation coordinators; emergency responders; users of open flames, flammable materials or chemicals; workers working at remote sites without ready access to a local fire department; or welders must also receive this training.

Hands-on training is required once every three years.

Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) | Initially and with new changes Employees who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals under normal operating conditions or in foreseeable emergencies.
Hearing Conservation Refresher Training | Annually All employees exposed to excessive noise.
Laser Safety Refresher Training | All employees who work with lasers.
Lockout Tagout Refresher | As needed Any employee who performs servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization or start up of the machines or equipment, or release of stored energy could cause injury to employees.

Radiation Safety Training | Annually

Researchers, educators and students who use radioactive material or radiation producing equipment at the University of Maine.
Resident Community Coordinator Fire & Safety Training | Annually All Resident Community Coordinators
Respiratory Protection | Initially and Annually All employees who are required to, or choose to, wear respiratory protection (including dust masks).
Safety Coordinator Information | As needed UMaine Safety Coordinators who wish to enhance their knowledge regarding their duties.
Satellite Accumulation Area Training | Initially and Annually Employees who work in a Satellite Accumulation Area (where hazardous wastes are initially generated and tend to accumulate).
Supervisor Safety Training | As needed UMaine supervisors who wish to enhance their knowledge regarding their safety roles and functions.

Universal Waste Training | Annually

Persons who manage Universal Waste (mercury containing devices, batteries, cathode ray tubes, fluorescent light bulbs, ballasts, etc.)
