HISTORY OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT

On April 12th of 1978, the University of Maine Students approved a new Constitution, outlining the organization of a new Student Government.  From that time on, Student Government has undergone several significant changes, but has maintained its basic structure.

Recently, Student Government celebrated its 25th anniversary.  In that time it has seen 25 different General Student Senates, and over 30 Presidents and Vice Presidents.  The organization has gone from successful to struggling, and back to successful.  It has moved from a very small budget, to 3/4 of a million dollars and 40 student employees.

If you are interested in reading a detailed account of the history of Student Government, visit the Student Government Office on the 1st floor of the Memorial Union.  We maintain a detailed historical account of the organization, and are happy to share that information.  We are considering uploading much of Student Government's history to this site if there is any kind of demand.  Please contact us if you are interested in any online content.
