This course introduces students to the Indian cultures of the United States and U.S. territories in the South Pacific paying particular attention to the issue of climate change and how it is impacting indigenous peoples in these regions. In addition, students will learn to appreciate the difference between Indigenous Knowledge (or TEK, traditional ecological knowledge) and western scientific knowledge of the changing climate in these regions in order to explore the strengths and weaknesses of each system of knowledge. This course examines climate effects on natural resource conditions as it relates to Indian cultures as well as what roles Indian Nations and other indigenous groups are taking on in the policy responses to climate change. Students will be introduced to the various legal and political strategies indigenous peoples are using as they adapt to both climate change and the increased globalization that will result from climate change.

This course looks at how an anthropological perspective can help us understand and contribute to agricultural policy debates. It will have a US focus and open with an investigation of who farmers are in the country today, with special attention to the shrinking middle of multi-generational family farms, the consolidation of land ownership, and the growth of small, organic farms. With this background, the class would focus on three anthropological themes as it explores contemporary debates. The first would be how farmers are adapting to change (environmental, economic, and demographic). The second would be the tension between local knowledge and economies of scale. The third would be farmer culture and the way this affects policy and land use. This year's drought, which may end up being the most widespread ever recorded, and policy responses to it, as well Congressional debates over this year's Farm Bill, will figure heavily in class content and discussion.
