DR. EDWARD D. IVESI am interested in History and Art--in History, how people shape and bring the past into the present; in Art, how people shape the world they find around and within them into apposite forms they can share with others--and both as seen in the context of three continua (or tensions): orality vis à vis literacy, continuity vis à vis innovation, and the individual vis à vis society. Most of my research has concentrated on the oral traditions of Maine and the Maritime Provinces of Canada, particularly on local songs and their makers but also on cycles of tales about local heroes. See also the Maine Folklife Center.
