O Horizon: This is the surface soil horizon,
composed of primarily organic soil materials that result from the decomposition
of litter.
E Horizon: The uppermost mineral soil horizon, found directly beneath the O horizon. This light colored horizon results from intensive acid leaching by organic acids often stripping all but silica from this thin layer. B Horizon: The subsurface horizon where iron, aluminum, and organic matter accumulates. The iron and organic matter give the soil its reddish brown color. Sublayers such as Bh or Bs horizons are defined within the B horizon. C Horizon: The soil parent material. Considered the original material from which all overlying soil horizons were developed. The Chesuncook C horizon is a dense basal till, known as a Cd horizon. |
