Frequently Asked Questions

Application and Admission

Can I receive copies of my application materials once they have been submitted to the Graduate School?

No, all materials become part of the permanent records of the Graduate School and are not returned.

I’m currently a student at the UMaine Graduate School and I would like to apply for another program, can I use my current file?

Yes, you may use your current Graduate School materials for another program, however you must submit a new application and essay. Applications for additional programs require a $10 application fee.

I applied two years ago but my application was rejected. Will the Graduate School still have these records?

The Graduate School keeps rejected files for two years. If you are re-applying you will need to complete a new application and submit the application fee again. However you can still use the application materials; letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores. Please contact our office at graduate@maine.edu to verify that we still have your records.

Where can I find information on Graduate entrance exams?

GRE and TOEFL, Educational Testing Service, www.ets.org, institution code for UM(Orono) is 3916 GMAT, Graduate Management Admissions Council, www.mba.com, institution code for UM(Orono) is 1ZF-RM-18 MAT, Harcourt Assessment, www.harcourtassessment.com, institution code for UM(Orono) is 1278 Millers Analogies Tests are the only exam offered on the UMaine Orono campus, please contact Debra Wright in Conference Services via email, debra.wright@umit.maine.edu

How do I know which exam is required for the program I am applying to?

Please refer to the Graduate School Application Instructions for a quick summary. If you require more information please contact the Graduate Coordinator for the program you are applying to for information on the tests that are required, or visit the department links for more information.

Will you review my application without the application fee?

No, applications are not even processed or reviewed for admission until the application fee has been paid in full. Supporting materials for the application are not reviewed without the application fee either.

How can I waive the required application fee?

The Graduate School does not waive the application fee, with few exceptions. 1. Native American Students may waive the application fee 2. McNair Scholars can waive the application fee. A letter from the McNair Director verifying participation in the program must accompany the application. 3. Current graduate students applying to a doctoral or CAS program within the same department do not need to pay the fee upon completion of their masters. 4. Applicants to the Physics program and the Master of Science in Teaching program may contact that department to inquire about fee waivers.

How will I know when my application will be reviewed for admission, and who will actually review my materials?

Applicants will receive another email once their file is complete, meaning the Graduate School has received the necessary documents; recommendations, test scores and transcripts to support the application. The email will notify the applicant that the file is going before the admissions review committee within the program that they are applying for and that the student must contact the graduate coordinator for their program for further information on the status of the file. Typically, admissions committees are made up of faculty members within that department. Decisions can take 4-6 weeks depending on the availability of the faculty committee and when they meet.

What if my letters of recommendation, transcripts or test scores arrive at the Graduate School before my application does?

All credentials, such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores that are received prior to a student’s application are held for 2 years. They are matched up accordingly as students apply.

When will I know if the Graduate School had received my application and application fee? And how can I check on my application status?

Applicants will receive an email once their application and fee have been received and processed by the Graduate School office. This email will contain information on logging into MaineStreet, the electronic system UMaine employees, students and applicants use to view and update their records. Applicants can use this system to monitor their To Do list (a list of materials needed to support an application file for admissions review).

Insurance

MaineStreet

I already have a MaineStreet account from my undergraduate program, do I need to activate it again?

NO, MaineStreet accounts are universally used at all seven UMaine campuses, regardless of undergraduate or graduate status. If you currently have a MaineStreet account, you do not need to re-activate it when you apply for Grad School. Just use the same account and monitor your graduate application information as directed in the above Q&A.

Non-Degree Status

I am a Non-Degree student and would like to register, how do I do that?

Non-Degree students must fill out a Registration Form and bring it to the Graduate School, or you can email Dianne Knight directly with the course(s) that you would like to register for.

Non-Degree Students can not register themselves.

I am not in a graduate degree program, but would like to take a graduate level class. How can I do that?

Students are those whose interest in advanced study is not related to a degree program or whose previous background or work does not immediately qualify them for admission to the Graduate School. A Bachelor’s degree is required in order to establish Non-Degree status.

Please fill out a Non-Degree application and Registration form, and submit proof of your bachelor’s degree (unofficial transcripts or a copy of your diploma are acceptable).

Students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree at UMaine system schools do not need to provide documentation for their degree.

There is a $35 application fee, and this Non-Degree status is valid for one calendar year.

Registration

I’d like to register myself, how can I do that?

You may log into your MaineStreet account and register online. For instructions on how to register in MaineStreet, please go here. If you have any trouble, please contact your department. You may need to have your registration form processed though the Graduate School with a signed registration form from your advisor.

I am a new graduate student in a degree program, how do I register for the first time?

You will need to meet with your advisor and fill out a Registration Form. Your advisor must sign the form every time you register if you are in a degree program. Please bring your first registration to the Graduate School and we will register you for classes. Your advisor may also email Dianne Knight on First Class in place of a registration form.

I'm in a program and want to take a class from another university, how can I do that while still keeping my status with UMaine?

Students in a degree program with the University of Maine who choose to study at another university within the United States need to fill out a Domestic Study Away Form. More information can be obtained from the form itself, or by calling the Graduate School.

Students wishing to study abroad must fill out the International Study Away Form. Both forms can be found under Forms and Documents.
