Frequently Asked Questions

Applications & Admissions

What if my letters of recommendation arrive at the Graduate School before my application does?

All credentials, such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores that are received prior to a student’s application are held for 2 years. They are matched up accordingly as students apply.

When will I know if the Graduate School had received my application and all of the supporting documents needed for admissions review?

Applicants will receive an email once their file is complete, meaning the Graduate School has received the necessary documents; recommendations, test scores and transcripts to support the application. The email will notify the applicant that the file is going before the admissions review committee and that the student must contact the graduate coordinator for their program for further information on the status of the file.

How can I waive the required application fee?

The Graduate School does not waive the application fee, with few exceptions.

1. Native American Students may waive the application fee

2. McNair Scholars can waive the application fee. A letter from the McNair Director verifying participation in the program must accompany the application.

3. Graduate students currently in a program at UMaine Orono do not need to re-pay the fee. Recent graduates from the Graduate School may waive the fee if applying for another program within one year of their graduation. Rejected applicants to the Graduate School may re-apply within one year without paying the application fee again.

4. Applicants to the Physics program and the Master of Science in Teaching program may contact that department to inquire about fee waivers.

I’m currently a student at the UMaine Graduate School and I would like to apply for another program, can I use my current file?

Yes, you may use your current Graduate School file for another program. Please send an email to graduate@maine.edu to inquire. We will send you the proper form to fill out. You may also pick one up in our office, Winslow Hall Room 2.

Graduation

When does my department have to notify the Graduate School that I have completed all the requirements of my degree so that I can graduate?

Departments have up to 6 weeks after graduation to let us know you have completed all the requirements of your program and are eligible for Graduation. Remind your graduate coordinator to fill out, sign, and submit your Completion of Requirements.

Insurance

How does the insurance benefit work?

You are eligible for the Graduate Assistants, Fellows and Trainees policy if you are appointed as a graduate assistant (TA or RA), work 20 hours a week (those hours are in addition to taking at least 6 credits of graduate classes), and earn a minimum stipend of $1,333.33 monthly. The current total costs of domestic insurance are $1,770.00 (From Sept.1st, 2007 - Sept. 1st 2008) and $1,185.00 (From Jan. 1st, 2008 - Sept. 1st 2008). If you are eligible (as indicated previously) then one half of that cost is covered by your assistantship. Full policy information can be found in the brochure.  For information on insurance for international students, visit the Cross Insurance Agency website HERE.

How and when can I waive out of the insurance policy?

You can fill out an online waiver form HERE.  Please abide by the September 21st, 2007 deadline for Fall, and April 8th, 2008 for Spring. Renewal of waivers is not automatic. You must renew your waiver at the beginning of every academic year. Failure to submit a new waiver will cause you to be enrolled in, and charged for, the insurance policy.
