The recently established
University of Maine Graduate
School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) will offer a doctoral degree in
biomedical sciences with concentrations in molecular and cellular biology;
neuroscience; biomedical engineering; and functional
genomics. Applications are currently being accepted for admission in Fall
2006. Students admitted to the GSBS will receive full fellowship support,
including a stipend, tuition support, and health insurance benefits.
Collaborating with the University
of Maine in creating the school are: The
Jackson Laboratory, Maine
Medical Center Research Institute, Mount
Desert Island Biological Laboratory, University
of Southern Maine, and University
of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Eastern
Maine Healthcare's Maine Institute for Human Genetics. Other research
centers such as the Institute
for Molecular Biophysics will also be involved in the new biomedical
sciences program. All of the partners will collaborate in offering classes and
mentoring graduate students.

Graduate Assistants Receive Stipend Increase of Nearly $2000
February 10, 2006
We are very pleased to announce that
effective Fall 05, the minimum graduate assistantship stipend will increase from
$9010 to $11,000 for a nine-month academic year appointment. All graduate
assistantship positions administered through the Graduate School and all
work-study assistantship positions will receive the increase immediately. Any
other half-time (20 hrs/week) assistantships which provide compensation at a
level that is not equivalent to $11,000 for the academic year should make plans
to increase to this level within the next year. The University of Maine's goal
is to bring its minimum graduate stipend to the average of the New England Land
Grant universities, which would mean raising graduate stipends by at least
another $2000 in the near future.
We wish to thank President Kennedy, Provost
ad interim Mahon, Vice President Eckardt and Vice President Waldron, as well as
former Graduate Dean, Deirdre Mageean, and the members of the Graduate Board
Executive Committee for their efforts on behalf of our graduate student
population.
