UMaine Intermedia MFA Student Grand Prize Award Winner in John Lennon Songwriting Contest

The Graduate School and the Intermedia MFA program is proud to announce that MFA
in Intermedia student Dan Flannery received a Grand Prize Award in the
John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Flannery won in the Children's category for his
song "One Wasn't Enough," a catchy tune with funny lyrics that
simultaneously offer an insightful commentary on our culture of consumption. As
a Grand Prize Winner Flannery is also a finalist for both the Lennon Award and
the Maxell Song of the year that carries with it an award of $20,000 (to be
announced in July 2009)
The John Lennon Songwriting Contest (JLSC) is an international songwriting
contest that began in 1997. The Contest is open to amateur and professional
songwriters who submit entries in any one of 12 categories. The JLSC is open
year-round and features two Sessions -- with 72 Finalists, 24 Grand Prize
Winners, 12 Lennon Award Winners and 1 Maxell Song of the Year.
Entries were judged on originality, melody, composition, and lyrics (when
applicable). Awards were presented in the following categories: Rock, Country,
Jazz, Pop, World, Rhythm & Blues, Hip Hop, Gospel/Inspirational, Latin,
Electronic, Folk, and Children's.
Some of the members on the Executive Committee of Judges are Al Jarreau, Bob
Weir, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, Jesse Harris, Teairra Mari, The Black Eyed
Peas, The Bacon Brothers, Ken Komisar and The Veronicas.
