The 10th Annual Graduate Research Exposition, one of the most anticipated events at the University of Maine, is well underway with only a month to go! The Graduate Student Government (GSG) is excited about this opportunity to showcase and reward graduate academic excellence and creative achievement. The Expo will take place April 15-16, 2008 in the Buchanan Alumni House, an elegant setting for a celebration of this caliber. The Gala, a social event open to all faculty and graduate students, is scheduled for April 15th at 6PM.

There are seven categories for judging: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Engineering/Spatial Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Education, and Visual and Performing Arts. Students can choose one of three modes to present their research: poster, oral, or multimedia/web/video/ arts. They will be judged across disciplines with a cash prize sequence of $250, $150, and $100 for first, second, and third respectively.

This year we are proud to award a new Commercialization Potential Award that carries a cash prize of $500 for first, $250 for second, and $100 for third place winners. Winning participants will also receive a support package provided by the Foster Student Innovation Center (FSIC) that will include ongoing business development assistance from the FSIC staff, additional resources and space within the FSIC, if desired. The intent of this award is to recognize the research of graduate students at the University of Maine that shows promise in regards to developing a commercial product or service. The University of Maine has a long tradition of supporting higher education and providing resources and opportunities to its talented student population. This award is meant to showcase those students whose research has the potential to generate a feasible and innovative product or service. All graduate students in any discipline who are in good standing with the Bursars Office and the Graduate School are eligible to apply. With this category, students are also required to submit a poster for presentation at the Expo.

The Expo is an ideal opportunity for graduate students to gain presentation experience, networking opportunities, valuable feedback, and ideas with a university-wide audience. Works in progress, thesis and dissertation research, and independent projects are all equally viable candidates for presentation. Feedback from Expo alumni indicates that the Expo is an excellent forum in which to hone your presentation skills for professional conferences and the thesis/dissertation defense.
