On behalf of the University of Maine, welcome to the Graduate School’s website!

The decision to pursue graduate study is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.  During your time in Graduate School, you will make the transition from being a student to becoming a scholar and a professional with the ability to engage in a lifetime of learning.  You will meet faculty members who will become life-long colleagues, and you will begin to develop relationships that will last throughout your professional career.

As the State’s public research university, the University of Maine offers over 25 doctoral programs and over 60 master’s programs in a wide variety of fields, ranging from the arts and sciences to programs in forestry, agriculture, and engineering to professional degrees in education, business, and other areas.  The University is highly committed to the support of its graduate students, increasing assistantship stipends by 50% and adding health benefits in the past few years.  The University’s faculty members are highly engaged in the academic and professional development of their advisees, providing a very personalized mentoring experience.

You will find that a primary strength of the University of Maine is its interdisciplinary programs.  UMaine is one of only a handful of universities across the country to have two separate National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education, Research and Training (IGERT) programs offering cutting edge graduate research opportunities.  With a number of interdisciplinary research centers hosting state-of-the-art facilities and with Fogler Library, Maine’s most significant research library, the University of Maine offers exciting new opportunities for graduate study.

We encourage you to explore this website.  You will find information on a number of areas related to graduate study at the University of Maine, including application instructions, information on assistantships and other types of financial support, and links to individual graduate programs.  If the information provided on this website does not answer your question(s), we encourage you to contact the Graduate School office staff members, who are identified on this page.

The Graduate School coordinates a number of academic and social events throughout the year to help each graduate student become a member of our community.  You will be able to find detailed information about these events in the calendar link on this website.

We sincerely expect that you will find the University of Maine to be the ideal place to meet the challenges and reap the rewards of graduate study.

Sincerely,

Daniel H. Sandweiss
Dean and Associate Provost for Graduate Studies
