Welcome from the GSG President
On behalf of the Graduate Student Government (GSG), I would like to welcome all the new graduate students to the University of Maine.
As a graduate student, you will benefit in many ways from the service of the Graduate Student Government. The GSG provides funding for graduate students in the form of grants for conference travel and degree related expenses. We offer short-term loans of laptops to graduate students who find themselves in need of one. Our Graduate Research Exposition (The Expo) offers an opportunity to be recognized for research efforts. We work with a variety of University Committees and Administrators to advocate for the improvement of the Graduate Experience in meaningful ways including lower fees, higher stipends for Graduate Assistants, and better accommodations for living and working on campus. Perhaps most importantly, we provide a network of graduate students from a variety of disciplines and with a variety of experiences. Issues that you encounter as a Graduate Student are often not new, and the GSG may already have found a solution, or be working toward one.
I would strongly encourage you to become involved with the GSG. Find out who represents your department at our Senate meetings. Find our First Class folder, and check it periodically for information on GSG happenings and opportunities relevant to graduate students. Stop by our offices in rooms 60 and 62 of Stodder Hall if you have issues, concerns, questions, suggestions, or just want to say hello. If your department is among the few that are not represented in the GSG Senate (all departments are eligible, but a few do not send representatives), consider taking on the position yourself. The time commitment is small, but the potential benefits are great!
I wish you all much success in your graduate studies here at the University of Maine.
