Welcome from the GSG President
On behalf of the Graduate Student Government (GSG), I would like to welcome all the new graduate students to the University of Maine.
As a graduate student, you will benefit directly from the service of the Graduate Student Government (GSG). The GSG supports an active grants program, which funds graduate students in the form of grants for conference travel and degree related expenses. Our Graduate Research Exposition (The Grad Expo) offers a great opportunity to present your research efforts in a professional setting, and learn about graduate student work outside your department. We work with a variety of University committees and administrators to advocate for the improvement of graduate life including lower fees, social gatherings specific to graduate students, adequate health insurance for GAs, RAs and TAs, higher stipends, and better accommodations for living and working on campus. Perhaps most importantly, we provide and maintain a network of graduate students from a variety of disciplines and with a variety of experiences to address emerging issues specific to the graduate student experience on campus.
I encourage you to become involved with the GSG! Our meetings, held every two weeks, are open to all graduate students – our schedule can be found here. Find out who represents your department at our senate meetings, and go to them for updates on GSG activities. Stop by our offices in rooms 60 and 62 of Stodder Hall or contact us directly if you have issues, concerns, questions, suggestions, or just want to say hello. If your department is among the few that are not represented in the GSG Senate (all departments are eligible, but a few do not send representatives), consider taking on the position yourself. The time commitment is small, but the potential benefits are great!
Good luck in your graduate studies here at the University of Maine.
Mo Correll
President, Graduate Student Government
