Information
contained herein obtained from the Town of Bucksport's
Annual Report 1996-97
The past year saw the Department
facing a wide variety of construction and maintenance
challenges. We began the fiscal year with the complete
reconstruction of Franklin Street, from Pine Street
intersection to Bridge Street intersection and all of
Nicholson Avenue. Utilizing a combination of contract
dollars and the town's own personnel, the two streets
received new sewer main, new storm drainage system, curbs,
sidewalks and a new road surface. The summer construction
season also resulted in the reconstruction of a portion of
Broadway. This work allowed the town to solve long term
sewer and storm drainage problems and improve the appearance
around the High School.
As in the past, work on town roads
was not limited to the urban area. The Department completely
rebuilt a half mile of the Robshaw Road, a quarter mile on
the Willis Road, and all of the Willins Road. These newly
paved roads eliminated several extremely hazardous sections
and greatly enhanced the snow removal capability for
residents of these roads. Additionally, department personnel
cleared trees and cleaned the ditches for almost three miles
of road.
In fiscal year 1996-97, the Town
Council authorized the purchase of over 3,000 tons of
asphalt pavement for various roads in all areas of the town.
We also completed the repair of all the sidewalks within the
"Town Site".
During the past year, the
Department purchased a new multipurpose sidewalk snow
removal tractor. The new tractor replaced a 1960's vintage
plow. This tractor has an enclosed heated operator's
compartment with vastly superior visibility which is greatly
appreciated by the operators. The new equipment is equipped
not only with a snow plow by handles a snow blower which is
capable of loading snow directly into dump trucks. We
believe this snow blower will greatly reduce the time
required to clear snow piles from our narrowest streets.
The 1996-97 snow season proved to
be very unusual. While snow storms were very infrequent, the
storms that did occur created a great deal of icing on the
roads. As a result, the Highway Division used almost the
normal amount of ice salt and sand. Between November 1996
and April 1997, we applied approximately 6,000 cubic yards
of sand and salt mix.
The support of the Town Council and
citizens has enabled the Public Works Department to make
enormous strides in reaching our goals of enhancing the
total appearance of the town's facilities and the long
upkeep of the towns' infrastructure. We anticipate more
improvements in the future.
Respectfully submitted,
Duane R. Nadeau, Public Works Director.
