Be A Bucksport Community Reader!

Back to Education

The Buck Memorial Library is open to all who wish to make use of the services available.

Appropriations from the towns of Bucksport, Orland, Verona allow these residents to sign out books free of charge. A non-resident fee is charged to all others.

The library is open Monday through Friday, 10:00-5:00 and Saturday, 10:00- 12:00. Story Hour is held every Saturday from 10:00- 11:00 and Wednesday 10:30-11:30. All ages are welcome and volunteers are encouraged to visit and read.

Grants and donations have been generous from the many groups, organizations, clubs and the public.

New chairs were purchased for the Reading Room, with many donated for Memorials.

With support and guidance from the Board of Trustees, Benjamin Blodget, Ralph Jewett, Nancy Bourgon, Natalie McFarland, Arthur Joost, G. Richard Berry and Robert Blake, the library staff, Gabrielle Rankin, Phyllis Wardwell, Jennifer Thibeau and volunteer Janice Leach, we will do our best to continue to make the library a valuable resource for the community.

Be A Bucksport Community Reader!

Bucksport Adult and Community Education’s Family Literacy Program is once again sponsoring a Community Reader Program. Right now we have 10 classrooms at the Miles Lane K-3 School that would like to welcome a guest reader from our community each week. So we are looking for volunteers who could spare one half hour, one time to come in and read to a small group or whole class of children. If you’d like to volunteer more than once, just let us know and we’d be happy to call on you again. But one time is all we’re asking right now. We have time slots everyday, Monday through Friday, mornings and afternoons, so could probably find a half hour to fit into anyone’s schedule.

The goal of this program is to let children know that reading is for everyone and to involve community members in the support of our children’s literacy development. If you are interested, the program’s coordinator, Joni Wardell (Family Literacy Program) will contact you to arrange a time and to answer any questions you may have. Books may be chosen by you or by the classrooms, whichever you prefer.

Please consider this very worthwhile opportunity to "connect" with our community children and let them now that reading is something that you, too, consider important. You can make a difference and would be a very welcome addition to our program. If you would like to volunteer or want more information, please fill out the form below and send in to the Miles Lane School or mail to:

Or you could call Jodi at 469-7208 or leave a message at Bucksport Adult and Community Education, 469-2129.

Thanks for your support
Sincerely,

Joni Wardell.
