The Adult and Family Learning Center

The Adult and Family Learning Center, located at 49 Elm Street opened in October 1998 staffed by the family literacy coordinator and the primary Adult Education tutor. A learning Center open house was held on December 8, 1998, to mark the opening of this new learning opportunity and program in Adult Education.  Learners

1998-1999 has been a busy and productive year for Adult and Community Education staff. By June 1998, Bucksport Adult and Community Education took 882 registrations: 213 in vocational courses, 428 in general interest courses, 111 in basic literacy, 126 in diploma courses, 4 in college courses. Sixteen individuals graduated through the Bucksport Adult and Community Education program: 11 from Bucksport, 2 from Orland; one Castine; one, Hermon; and one Penobscot. Eleven adult students were honored for high academic achievement at the Partners in Education honors banquet held in May; and once again for the 6th or 7th year in a row, four of Bucksport Adult Community Education’s GED recipients were honored at an August reception at the Blaine house held by the Maine Department of Education to recognize the ten highest scorers in the State on the GED examination. One of our four honorees was the top scorer in the state for 1998. At the time of graduation, most graduates had procured jobs and some were applying to enter college.

Director

On May 27, 1999 in the Miles Lane School cafeteria, the Bucksport Town Council voted to have a full-time director for the Adult and Community Education program. This step was preceded by years of careful preparation and growth, a step which should help Bucksport Adult and Community Education to serve the community even better than it has already. It seems more true presently than ever before, that although adult education appears to be, and is by its very nature, separated from K-12 education, the success of adult education significantly impacts K-12 education. The stronger the adult education program, the easier the job for K-12 educators, and parents; for adult education programming concerns adults and families, preschool to senior citizens. The above accomplishments mark the end of a year filled with exciting educational successes for area citizens. A true strength of the Bucksport Adult and Community Education program lies in its responsiveness to the community. All involved,  administrational advisory council, teachers, staff. and the community at large, have shown support for this educational mission. It is through this support that Bucksport Adult and Community Education will continue to meet citizens’ needs.

Respectfully submitted,
