High School
A Community Report, 1997
High school is another transition in the educational
experience of our students, a gateway to many options-the
world of work, college and other post secondary schools, the
military, etc. We have to prepare students to make these
choices and to have the skills to be successful in the
chosen pathway(s). WE are working to continuously improve
course offerings, curriculum and programs for all students.
Our community needs every one of our students to be a
success story and, to this end, we have many initiatives at
work. Here are a few.
Dropout prevention
efforts: We recently received recognition from
the State Department of Education, as one of three high
schools in the state to reduce their drop our rate for four
consecutive years. Several of our staff members have been
instrumental to this success. One of them, Deborah A.
Holmes, has been nominated for the Commissioners
Award, given annually to tan individual who has had
significant impact in the area of dropout prevention.
Schedule Changes: one
schedule for next year will be a combination of 40 minute
year-long classes and 80 minute semester courses. We are
very excited with the many possibilities this schedule
brings to our existing programs.
Grading Practices: Along
with this change, we are instituting weighted grades for our
Honors and AP classes which will hopefully, increase the
number of students participating in these challenging
courses.
Activities as well as
Academics:
Part of a well-rounded high school program are the
activities and athletics that are offered. Both the
Girls and Boys Varsity basketball teams made it
to the playoffs at the Bangor Auditorium and the Boys
team captured the Eastern Maine Championship. Our 38 person
indoor track team was a "Cinderella team", raising funds to
even have the program. The wrestling team was very young but
had an excellent season with the future looking brighter
than ever. Our cheerleaders and band received compliments
throughout the season for their exceptional talent and
school spirit.
Other groups have represented our community well. The
Drama Club recently participated in the State Drama
competition. Several students participated in a National
Engineering competition at U.M.O. and placed third in the
state. The Mock Trial team placed first in the regional
competitions. Our talented art students on Miles Lane in
Bucksport. Get further details on rates, schedules, and
programs during your visit or give us a call.

Bucksport Town Report, 1998-1999
Many changes have taken place at the High School this summer! WE have had
the gym and the Library roof replaced, new recreation fields, an all-purpose
track and new grandstands installed. We would like to thank the entire
community for their continued support, with a special thank you to Mr. Roger
Raymond and the Town Council, for all their hard work with these
projects.
We are also very pleased to announce that we have six new staff members
this year. The new staff includes Lorraine Dube, mathematics, Mike Cowing,
mathematics, Caryn Vita, special education, Joel Pelletier, industrial arts,
Norma Dorr and Mary Lou Hurd, educational technicians.
Recently, construction has started on our 8,000 sq. ft. Science and
Technology addition that will be one of the top facilities in the State, when
completed, enhancing our overall programming.
Our scores for the Senior class on the M.E.A.s have not been received as
of this writing, but some of the academic highlights have several of our
students doing extremely well on their S.A.T.s this year. Congratulations to
Moira Reilly, Sarah Thompson, Abe Grindle, Shawn Purcell, Patrick Lalonde and
Nate Ames for scores at or above 1300. A special congratulation goes to Sarah
Thompson for recently being selected as a National Merit Scholarship
Semi-Finalist. Our graduating Class of 1999 and over percent of the class
went on to further their education.
We will continue to focus on security issues to ensure the safety of our
students and staff. We have all student and staff cars registered, all doors
except the main entrance have been locked and backpacks are no longer being
carried from class to class.
We continue to maintain an "open door" policy and welcome
visitors to the high school. If you have any suggestions on how we can
improve our school, please stop by and let us know.
Respectfully submitted,
Thomas Comiciotto, Principal

Course Levels and
Weights: Bucksport High Schools academic
program uses a system where grades for Honors and Advanced
Placement class are weighted. (See explanation below). Over
100 courses are offered. These courses include a basic core
of requirements together with opportunities for electives.
Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, U.S.
History, Calculus, and Physics together with eight other
courses designated as Honors level in English, Social
Studies, Math and Art. For all science classes, the lab
component is included within the actual class time.
Placement into instructional levels is determined by the
high school staff, by test results, by teacher
recommendation and through conferences with parents.
Grading System:
Report cards are issued quarterly. Marks are recorded
numerically which indicate the scholastic achievement of the
student. The interpretation of these numbers is as
follows:
- A= 100-93
- B= 92-85
- C= 84-76
- D= 75-70
- S= Satisfactory/ Passing
- M= Medical
- U= Unsatisfactory/ Failing
- I= Incomplete
- W= Withdrawn
Grades for Honors and Advanced Placement courses are
weighted by a factor of 1.09, which raises them by
approximately one letter grade. The weighted grades are used
when calculating cumulative grade point average, class rank,
and honor roll. The original, unweighted grades for these
courses appear on the report card and transcript.
All citizens are encouraged to become involved in both youth
and adult education in Bucksport. Regular School Board
Meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each
month. In addition. other meetings encompassing such issues
as school finance, program budgets, School construction,
capital improvement, curriculum, negotiations and long-range
planning are scheduled during the year. We encourage and
need citizen involvement. Call 469-7311 for more information
about these groups.
