Curriculum & Staff Development Back to Education Curriculum Coordinator's Report This year has seen the following developments and trends in the area of curriculum and staff development. Curriculum Development of a system of curriculum-based tests in language arts and mathematics which will provide measures of our students’ performance, specifically as it relates to our curriculum. These tests are called "Benchmarks" and are being implemented in grades 2,6,8 and high school. Parents will be hearing more about these systems. Increased teamwork on curriculum and assessment across grade levels. An emphasis on utilizing writing skills across curriculum areas and using a common approach to teaching the language of writing. Expansion of the Reading Recovery program in grade 1 and a focus on literacy programs that prevent reading problems in the first place. Establishment of Summer School Programs (Title I) for grades 2 and 6. Linking of all aspects of curriculum with Maine’s Learning Results. Staff Development Teamwork to address students learning needs as indicated by local assessment, Maine Educational Assessments (M.E.A.’s) and IOWA Tests of Basic Skills. School based research on making programs and instruction more effective. Other Initiatives High academic performance for all Assessment/Accountability Communication School Climate Technology. Grant funds from the Maine Department of Education sponsored continued work on a Health/Physical Education Curriculum. A Maine Department of Education grant will allow us to sponsor staff dinner meetings to develop our assessment system.
