Bucksport Middle School
 A Community Report, 1997

The Middle Level is a critical link between the elementary and secondary school years. Emerging adolescents transition intellectually, physically, and socially. The G. H. Jewett School and Bucksport Middle School serve 486 fourth through eighth graders. Academics and activities for physical and social growth combine to help students to enter high school as "Competent and confident" learners. The educational challenge facing our schools is to maintain this solid core of fundamental knowledge and skills while changing our structure and instructional strategies to meet current expectations that almost everybody has to continue their education beyond high school and possess increasingly technical skills.

This year the School Board accepted the offer to join the Champion Middle School Partnership... "assists public school districts in Champion communities to redesign their middle level schools through staff development by using these recommendations of the Carnegie report on adolescent development, "Turning Points: preparing American Youth for the 21st Century, to improve student learning and to enhance the quality of their lives." Through the assistance of this partnership we will:

  • Create small communities for learning.
  • Teach a core academic program.
  • Ensure success for all students.
  • Empower teachers and administrators to make decisions about experiences of middle grade students.
  • Staff middle grade schools with teachers who are expert at teaching young adolescents.
  • Improve academic performance through fostering health and fitness.
  • Reengage families in the he education of young adolescents.

Principal's Report
Bucksport Town Report, 1998-1999

The Jewett School opened the 1998-99 school year with 81 students in grade four, 107 students in grade five, and 96 students in grade six for a total of 284 students. The students and staff were extremely excited with the addition of a computer to every classroom. The students at the Jewett School are indeed fortunate to be so well supported by a community dedicated to providing rich educational opportunities. The students at the Jewett School were involved in a wide variety of learning experiences intended to help them meet the challenges of a new century.

The sixth grade students took part for the first time in a dynamic program designed to increase their abilities to work with others, make choices that will add to their development, and develop a better sense of who they are as individuals. Camp Kieve came to the Jewett School complete with a climbing wall. Parents and students joined together in activities to help better communication and learned new strategies to communicate more effectively. It was a great addition to our school program. The staff from Camp Kieve noted that the Jewett School had one of the largest turnouts on its parent night that they had ever seen! The sixth graders took part in the Bucksport system’s assessments called the Benchmark Assessment. The students did very well on these assessments that were created and designed by staff. This year students involved in the school’s program "Odyssey of the Mind" attended the world competition after winning the local and state level. They had a wonderful experience and represented the Bucksport community well. This is a program run entirely by volunteers; as always our school volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of our students. Thank you to the many volunteers that support our schools. A big thank you to those involved in OM and congratulations! Bucksport Shop N Save and other area businesses supported the Jewett School in a variety of ways this year and we certainly appreciate their support of our students and programs. This year our fourth grade students took part in the new version of the MEA (Maine Educational Assessment) due to the changes in the assessment we have not received the results. I can tell you that our students took the assessment very seriously and were proud of their efforts. The Jewett School encountered many changes this year. In addition to the staff changes the school now has a full time principal. This will allow all staff to better meet all our students’ needs, improve educational opportunities and is greatly appreciated by staff and students alike. Thank you for your ongoing support as the Jewett School continues to meet the challenge o providing a high quality education.

Respectfully submitted,

Principal's Report
Bucksport Town Report, 1998-1999

The 1998-1999 school year was filled with many accomplishments. Tests scores on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills showed the majority of our students working well above grade level in Reading and Mathematics. Our 8th graders performed well above the state average on the writing section of the Maine Educational Assessment (MEA). Over 50% of the middle school population received the recognition of earning Honor Roll status for at least one of four ranking periods. Our middle school continues to benefit from the Champion International Partnership. With the assistance of a dedicated staff and the leadership of the CLT (Champion Leadership Team). The middle school has realized and revised a block schedule, improved code of discipline and improved communication between parents, teachers and students. Teachers are realizing that making connections between disciplines helps students apply the knowledge they learn to real life problems. Staff is planning thematic nuts for the 1999-2000 school year. Our advisor/advisee program has expanded by providing time for teachers and students to discuss issues relevant to the school, community and world.

We have submitted our application to the State Department of Education and anticipate good news on our plan to improve facilities for the students and parents of Bucksport. Our school has updated our technology by placing a computer in each of the classrooms with Internet access. The school has experienced a facelift in the hallways; stairwells and some classrooms, which helps build pride in the school. Please come visit our school this fall and see the positive things happening in our schools. We look forward to your continued support in the coming school year.
