Under what circumstances must I report?

Maine law requires that if a mandated reporter suspects that an adult has been abused, neglected or exploited, and there is reasonable cause to suspect that the adult is incapacitated or dependent, then that individual shall make a report to the Department of Health and Human Services.

When do I report?

A mandated reporter is required to make the report immediately or as soon as possible, first by telephone, then by written report within 48 hours if requested by the Department of Health and Human Services.
