Timothy Cole

Timothy M. Cole is Associate Professor of Political Science. He received his Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Washington in 1987. His principal teaching and research interests involve American foreign policy and national security policy, with a secondary interest in American constitutional law. His research focuses on the manner in which foreign policy leaders formulate, articulate, and justify their vision of American interests. His courses include American Foreign Policy, International Relations, International Security, American Civil Liberties, The American Constitution and Criminal Due Process, and various seminars in legal (principally first amendment) theory. His recent publications include "Avoiding the Quagmire : Alternative Rhetorical Constructs for Post-Cold War American Foreign Policy," Rhetoric and Public Affairs, 1999, 2(3), 367-393; "Talking About Public Opinion and Public Opinion Yet to Come: Media and Legislator Construction of Public Opinion in the Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal," The Communication Review, 4 (2): 219-251 (with Amy Fried, University of Maine); and "The Political Rhetoric of Sacrifice and Heroism and U.S. Military Intervention," pp. 139--154 in Bring 'Em On: Media and Politics in the Iraq War, Lee Artz and Yahya R.
