The Department has been recognized over the years for its outstanding instruction and scholarship, with three faculty receiving University of Maine Distinguished Professor Awards and one being named University of Maine Trustee Professor. The faculty have authored or edited 17 books and dozens of scholarly articles. Many have held regional and national positions within the profession.
Political Science faculty have been recipients of the Distinguished Maine Professor Award on four occasions. Walter Schonberger (1963), Robert Thompson (1969), Eugene Mawhinney (1982), and James Warhola (2002).
