Project Opportunity is a Title III grant funded through the Office of English Language Acquisition, United States Department of Education. Project Opportunity is operated through the University of Maine. The University of Maine is partnered with the Maine State Department of Education’s State Education Agency and fifteen Local Education Agencies to implement a comprehensive, state-wide teacher training program.

Through a four-pronged approach, Project Opportunity will ensure Maine’s teachers assist limited English proficiency students to meet state and local standards.

  • The project will support pre-service teachers to complete teaching certification and English as a Second Langauge (ESL) endorsement coursework. Click here for more information.
  • In order to support ESL students’ learning, in-service teachers require ongoing access to courses, workshops, and quality information. Click here for more information.
  • A Research Faculty Team is working to develop UMaine’s teacher preparation program designed for teachers of ESL. Click here for more information.
  • The project will provide technical support to partner Local Education Agencies in the form of workshops and ongoing ESL Praxis II preparation. Click here for more information.
