Previous Workshops

Workshops held in 2008-2009

  • English Language Learners (ELLs) & Mathematics: Ideas to Consider: This hands-on workshop will raise some questions and possible answers about how educators might improve the way our ELL students’ needs are meet in mathematics classroom. Teachers are aware of the changing demographics in Maine’s school systems, but sometimes struggle with concepts and ideas that will engage all of our students. In this workshop the presenter will share ideas he has gathered through his work with Indigenous educators and TODOS: Mathematics for ALL.

  • Praxis II® Preparation Workshop "English to Speakers of Other Languages”: The English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Praxis II® test assesses knowledge of a variety of subject areas (linguistics, language teaching methodology, curriculum, cultural diversity and testing and assessment) for teaching English Language Learners (ELL) in public schools. During the workshop we will examine and provide an overview of the test categories. We will also discuss how to prepare for the test and a few study tips will be offered. A workshop specific handout will be given out to participants for review and reference. The ESOL Praxis II® test is a requirement for the state of Maine English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement. The ESOL Praxis II® test code is 0360.

Workshops held in 2007-2008

The presenter will provide information for your school system about requirements and resources to be able to provide appropriate services to English Language Learners (ELLs). Topics including creating LAU plans; determine ELL needs; as well as methods and techniques to support ELLs will be presented.

Workshops held in 2006-2007

  • Helping English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom: Using Data and Collaborative Assessment for Strategic Instruction: English Language Learners (ELLs) in the K-12 classroom have differing academic language needs across the content areas as they attain higher levels of proficiency in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. ACCESS for ELLs and the NWEA, for example, are among the assessments which now provide more information about ELLs’ academic performance. The workshop will combine this student assessment information along with ELL work samples to help teachers in making strategic decisions about determining what and how to teach ELLs in the content classroom. This is a hands-onin-service workshop, where participants will learn how to combine student data with a collaborative assessment protocol to make more accurate and strategic instructional decisions.
  • Praxis Preparation: The Praxis Prep Workshop is for prospective teachers of English to speakers of other languages. The workshop will provide an overview of the content areas tested in the English to Speakers of Other Languages Test (Test Code 0360). Study tips will also be provided.
  • Practical Strategies for Achieving Success with ELL students: In this workshop we will review basic principles of language acquisition and then tackle the issue of how best to work with your ELL students in any given context, taking into account the possibilities, expectations, and constraints that will all be part of your work environment. The key issue will be making the best use of the time available to work with your ELLs in a purposeful and principled way so as to successfully transition into the mainstream academic environment.
  • Translating the Textbook: Curriculum Choices and Case Management for Low-Density ELL Populations (powerpoint): Often, ESL Methods textbooks are designed for those people teaching an ESL class. However, many Maine educators must work with ELLs without the critical density required to create an ESL class because of low-density ELL populations. This half-day workshop will focus on identifying potential ELLs correctly, deciding the amount and type of services to offer, using Sheltered English support (modification of mainstream material) versus Sheltered Content, as well as teaching grammar and reading comprehension strategies in context. We will touch on communication issues, Special Ed issues , and parallel services. This workshop offers a Big Picture overview of how to best serve the low-incidence ELLs in your district in combination with Take-Home lesson ideas and structural tips.
