Antarctic Glaciological Activity in 1997-2002
Japanese ITASE and GLOCHANT program
JARE 38 (1997-1998)
- ITASE challow ice coring at dome Fuji Station (130m in depth) and the south of Dome Fuji Station (79.0 S, 42.5 E, 56m in depth).
- Inland traverse around Dome Fuji Station for measurement of snow accumulation, surface snow sampling and setup GPS precise observation points.
- Round-year research at Dome Fuji Station; Surface snow sampling, pit work and aerosol sampling.
JARE 39 (1998-1999)
- ITASE shallow ice coring and firn air sampling at Dome Fuji Station (100m in depth) and in the H72 of coastal region (73m in depth).
- Inland traverse from coast to Dome Fuji; Surface snow sampling and snow accumulation measurement.
JARE 40 (1999-2000)
- Inland traverse in Shirase Drainage Basin; Establishment of new traverse routes along the principal flow line and the 2,200m contour line, GPS flow measurement, surface snow sampling and so on.
- Radio echo sounding with 30, 60 and 179 MHz radio echo sounders along the traverse routes.
JARE 41 (2000-2001)
- Study of drifting snow using a snow particle counter at Mizuho Station.
- Observation of melting processes in the coastal region of ice sheet.
JARE 42 (2001-2002)
- ITASE shallow ice coring at MD364 (80m in depth), Dome Fuji Station (120m) and YM85 (105 m). Firn air sampling was conducted at YM85.
- Inland traverse in Shirase Drainage Basin; Re-measurement of the surface elevation and precise position for glaciew flow measurement along the traverse route established by JARE 40.
- Preparation of deep ice coring at Dome Fuji: Shallow ice coring to 120 m in depth and casing pipe installation. Test flight of DC-3.
JARE 43 (2002-2003)
- Observation of melting processes in the coastal region of ice sheet.
- Preparation of deep ice coring at Dome Fuji: Construction of new drilling site and core processing facilities.
