A 2-km section of a 100-MHz radar profile located between Black Island and Minna Bluff near McMurdo. The inset shows the full 10-km line from which these data was taken. The absence of small folds on the internal layers makes sites like this more promising for shallow ice cores. The data also reveal spatial gradients in surface accumulation and basal melting. These factors would help to determine the necessary depths to drill for a 200 year record and would help to interpret data from those ice cores by allowing separation of spatial and temporal climate variations.
