Johnny Sale
Surveyor
I am very excited to be a member of the Light Ground Traverse this season in Antarctica, and look forward to the challenges and sublime beauty of the plateau. This will be my eighth summer season on the "Ice", with the majority of them as a Field Engineer/Surveyor in McMurdo Station. My duties included land surveying, GPS support, airfield layout on sea ice and glaciers and other science support in local area field camps. The LGT will be my first experience in the "deep field" and feel privileged to have the opportunity to travel and learn from such an experienced and capable team.
My responsibilities on the traverse will be navigation, field and crevasse safety, operating the ground penetrating radar units, airfield layout and assisting in any other capacity to insure the success of the traverse.
Home is no longer a storage unit. I recently bought a house in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the small town of Custer, surrounded by wooded hills, great granite to climb and close friends. I lived in Aspen, Colorado previously, where I worked as an Landscape Architect/Planner for the Aspen Skiing Company and enjoyed Snowboarding, Tele skiing and my passion...rock climbing. Always on the move, summers are spent as the "road warrior" off to the next climbing destination.
